Clients and friends, both local and abroad, often ask about the best methods for obtaining the services of a top trial attorney for counsel and representation. In response to those potentially seeking legal counsel, Azzam Elder advises it is a good idea to consider the following questions when interviewing prospective trial attorneys:

1.      What occupies most of the attorney’s time? Are they litigating, or are they not as active in trying cases as they once were? Trial attorneys need keep their “trial muscles” in training. Don’t be swayed by someone’s impressive reputation of yesteryear. You need a skilled litigator who is currently practicing in the courtroom with you.

2.      How much experience does the attorney have with trying cases? Azzam Elder has amassed a wide variety of experience by trying over one hundred cases. A competent trial attorney will be proud to share their credentials. Any trial attorney you are considering hiring should be able to detail their legal education, specialties, and courtroom and trial experience. If they hesitate to share these details, or if something doesn’t sound quite right, politely and quickly move along.

3.      Ask your prospective attorney if they are registered with their local Bar Association. If the trial attorney claims to be registered, be sure to telephone the association to confirm he or she is in good standing.

Do Your Research

A little preparation can go a long way when you are working in the global arena. Don’t just limit yourself to Google; there resources available at libraries, embassies, trade missions, business development organizations, etc. Take every opportunity available to learn more about the culture of your prospective clients. When you are looking to take your career globally, there is no such thing as too much information.

Be Aware of Major Cultural Differences

Doing your research will help make you aware of the major cultural differences or opposing viewpoints that you may encounter in your travels or in dealing with clients. For example, it serves you much better to know before arriving in China, that asking direct questions will result in almost anything other than a direct answer. Not only that, but you will most likely offend your host or prospective client and/or business partner.

Give Yourself Adequate Time to Learn About and Experience New Cultures

When working with clients abroad or investigating new foreign direct investment opportunities, remember to have patience. Cultivating knowledge of other cultures and successful business partnerships takes time. Don’t put undue pressure on an already challenging situation by imposing unrealistic time lines. If you want to do business abroad or serve a global clientele, resign yourself to a life on the road, and give yourself the time to learn.

Azzam Elder has noted that all of his most successful clients place a premium on better time management via master delegation skills.

Understand Micro-management Is One of the Biggest Business Time Wasters

Micro-managing your employees is like doing both your job and theirs. Value your employees. Provide them with necessary training so you and your employees will know they have the skills to get the job done right. With this method, you will also be able to delegate with full confidence.

Credit Employees Appropriately and Often

Sometimes just some succinct and sincere feedback about a job well done can resonate deeply with an employee or team member. Don’t miss an opportunity to praise a job well done or to credit an employee who goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Azzam Elder believes that most happy employees work for bosses with a high level of emotional intelligence. Here are Azzam Elder’s tips for how to improve your emotional intelligence:

Seek to Employ People Who Are Smarter Than You

You might have heard this piece of advice before but it is worth repeating. Always look to hire people who are smarter you. It just makes good business sense. Don’t let that tricky ego get in the way of your emotional intelligence or your bottom line. Azzam Elder likes to network with his former law school professors to get the scoop on the top law school grads looking for employment opportunities.

Constantly Develop Your Thick-skin and Resilience to Taking Things Personally

Stressful work situations or deadlines can invoke unpleasant reactions in many people. It is important to remember to never take these common work scenarios to heart, or personally. Being emotionally intelligent means cultivating your ability to stay neutral and above the fray when drama breaks out.

Cultivate an Aptitude for Forgiveness

Sometimes the best or most innovative business ideas can come from the folks who are not always our favorite team members. If you are one to hold grudges, then you could be missing out on some great opportunities. It is important to stay open to new possibilities, no matter who might be giving them to you.

Beyond 1st World Problems

Participating in public service on a global level has taught Azzam Elder about the struggles faced by many around the world. He realized charitable works are needed in his own community, but a difference can also be made globally when people are willing to travel abroad to assist those in need.

Getting Involved in Your Community and the World

Azzam Elder finds that participating in community service both at home and abroad serves to greater connect him, as a person, to both his home environment and to the global village. These connections are vital for human development and harmony.

On the Job Learning for Being a True Global Citizen

Defy the Ignorant American Stereotype

Some people around the world believe the stereotype that Americans lack knowledge about other places in the world and the people who populate them. Azzam Elder knows global community service is not only a great way to gain an improved sense of empathy, but it is also valuable for meeting diverse groups of people and helping to ease this stereotypical view of the American. Azzam Elder has always appreciated the diverse viewpoints he encounters and the stimulating conversations he engages in while participating in global service projects. He uses what he’s learned in his travels for his business and for making himself a better person.

Effective networking is a skill that is important for all professionals to master. Everyone needs to devote time every week to maintaining and growing personal and professional networks. Top legal mind and respected Michigan attorney, Azzam Elder, is the founder of Elder Law Group and Halo-Bloom, LLC, an investment and business advisory services group. Successfully cultivating and maintaining his professional and personal networks has been crucial to his success in the law and business fields. Here are some of Azzam Elder’s best practices for effective networking.

Networks: Development and Maintenance Are Always Critical

The only time you can safely stop cultivating and maintaining your network is when you have departed this earth. Think of your network like a big shark that needs to keep swimming or it will die. You need to not only be constantly swimming in new waters to meet new folks, but you also need to be keeping in touch with established contacts as well. Quick emails with good content or short notes attached to good content via snail-mail are great ways to keep let contacts know you are thinking about them and want to share quality info with them for their benefit.

Ease into Network Development

Start out easy by getting back in touch with established contacts. Then, ramp up to the more challenging network development process. Becoming involved in professional organizations and charitable organizations are great ways to expand your network by meeting new people in friendly, no pressure environments.

Embrace Dedicated Networking Events and Meet-Ups

Take the anxiety out of dedicated networking events by taking away the pressure. Set reasonable goals in terms of time spent and new connections made. Azzam Elder suggests giving yourself a time limit and a goal to meet. For example, set a goal of meeting three new people. Focus on quality not quantity. Your goal is to make a friendly connection and follow up later with a coffee or lunch invitation so you can begin to build a real relationship with your new contact.

There are many benefits of giving back to the community. For experienced philanthropist and volunteer Azzam Elder, the rewards of public service are numerous and highly rewarding, and can help to build a stronger and more sustainable local community.

Azzam Elder is a professional litigator and a successful business person who always makes time in his schedule for active community involvement. He understands that proactive community involvement is essential to the development of a safer, cleaner and healthier local environment. Being active in the community, at least for Azzam Elder, can help a volunteer not only develop a stronger and more knowledgeable relationship with their community, but can also provide the less fortunate with a valuable service that may help to boost their quality of life.

There are many ways to give back, or to donate one’s time. Perhaps the most obvious, or at least popular ways to give back, says Azzam Elder, is to make financial donations to local nonprofits and charitable institutions. Many local organizations, particularly those that provide food, blankets and shelter to the local impoverished populations, rely on the financial support of outside contributors. Without consistent philanthropic support, says Azzam Elder, it would be impossible for many of these institutions to survive, and many valuable and supportive services would subsequently be lost as a result.

Another powerful way to help the local community is to volunteer. This may also seem obvious, but many who want to help out struggling populations often fail to set aside the time needed to be helpful. Sacrifice is necessary, says Azzam Elder, to make a community work, and to show people that the health of one’s community is an important individual value.

Making yourself available for charitable causes, at least occasionally, can be of enormous help to those who rely on those causes for support. Philanthropists and volunteers like Azzam Elder do a lot for community improvement, but they can always use more help.

Azzam Elder was admitted to the Michigan Bar Association in 1995 and began his professional career as a trial attorney in Michigan. Through his work on over 100 cases in several areas of law, Azzam Elder cultivated a specialty in health care law. Seeking trial experience immediately upon his graduation from Michigan State University College of Law, Azzam Elder was later drawn to cases in the health care. Azzam Elder quickly became known as a top litigator in the state of Michigan.

Azzam Elder has been actively working at the intersection of the legal, business, and health care fields for over twenty years. Here are some of Azzam Elder’s recommendations for building your skills as a top litigator in your field of specialty:

Seize Every Opportunity for Practice

One of the most important traits every top litigator possesses is confidence. You need confidence to command a court room and to argue effectively in front of a judge and a jury. Confidence at trial is only developed via practice. Take every opportunity to be in court or in court like scenarios. Participate in mock trials and volunteer your time with law clinics and legal aid services. These opportunities offer low pressure ways to develop your oral skills and gain valuable experience.

Find a Mentor

Almost every renowned, successful trial attorney has had the benefit of great mentorship. Trying cases is challenging and exhilarating all at the same time. When you are just beginning your career as a trial lawyer, you need a mentor like you need food and water. A mentor can be your go-to for both procedural and logistic questions as well as a wise authority on the psychological aspects of successful trial law. It may take time and effort to find a good and supportive mentor, but it will be one of the most fruitful endeavors to advance your career.

Passing the bar exam can seem like an intimidating feat to even the best law students. The bar exam is known for its difficult questions, long format, and wide range of topics. But with proper studying and preparation, you can tackle the exam with confidence and proficiency.

Azzam Elder graduated from Michigan State University College of Law in 1995. He graduated Magna Cum Laude.  Today Azzam Elder focuses in business, healthcare, and litigation. Azzam Elder has also been a Michigan Bar Member since 1995. He understands firsthand how difficult it is to pass the bar exam and would like to give some advice for those looking to pass the exam in the near future.

(1) Graduate from Law School

Before you can even pursue the bar exam, you must obtain your law degree from an accredited school. While the curriculum in law school is quite different from much of the material on the bar exam, Azzam Elder advises people to take law school very seriously. You will learn a lot during these few years about how to critically approach problems and remain disciplined.

(2) Register for a Prep Course

Next, Azzam Elder advises people to register and participate in a bar exam preparation course. These courses are extremely helpful and give students practical examples of potential essay questions and problems. Azzam Elder tells people to research the prep courses and find ones that are certified and licensed. It is worth it to spend a little extra money for a course which is proven and respected.

(3) Study, Review, Study

Repetition is key to passing the bar exam. Azzam Elder tells people to study, review, and study more. This means studying all of the topics you can, take many  practice exams, reviewing what you miss, and then studying some more. Azzam Elder believes you can never prepare yourself too much for taking the bar exam.
